Tips To Conserve Water

With more and more areas struggling with droughts, conserving water is more important than ever. Even if you're not living in a drought-stricken region, cutting back on water use also means a lower utility bill and helps conserve a precious resource. There are lots of big and small ways that you can do to conserve water around your home. Even a few small changes can add up to hundreds of gallons in water savings each year! Here are a dozen water-saving tips to get you going...

Why Save Water?

The average family spends more than $1,000 per year in water costs, but can save more than $380 annually simply by retrofitting with WaterSense fixtures and ENERGY STAR appliances. And, heating water is typically the second largest use of energy in a home. Saving water means using less energy, and that’s good for your pocketbook.

Beyond the billing statement, keep in mind that water is running short across the entire Western U.S. Saving now means preparing for a future where we’ll all need to live with a little less.

Be a Toilet Leak Detective

Household leaks can waste 900 billion gallons of water annually. And, not all toilet leaks make noise. So how do you know if yours is in shape? Simply put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait at least 15 minutes. If any of the dye shows up in the bowl, it’s time to check the flapper.

Be smart about Irrigation

Are you watering the sidewalk? Maybe you’ve got brown spots. Residents, businesses and HOAs are invited to sign up for a Water Smart irrigation assessment. Let HC3 connect you with a certified irrigation professional to keep your yard beautiful without wasting water. Here’s how it works:

  • Schedule an irrigation assessment with a certified professional. You’ll receive on-the-spot quick fixes and custom recommendations that could save you thousands of gallons of water each year.
  • Be present during the assessment to learn more about your system and preventing water waste.
  • Fill out the rebate form to help cover the costs of your assessment (up to $125 back for residents and $750 for HOAs).
  • Work with your irrigation professional to keep your space beautiful while making your system even more efficient. You’ll qualify for additional rebates!
